Sleeves

Suit jackets in all styles typically have three or four buttons Suit on each slap, which are often purely decorative. Five buttons Suit are abnormal, but are a modern fashion improvement. The number of buttons is primarily a purpose of the requirement of the suit; a very formal summer sports jacket might have traditionally have had only one button suits, while tweed suits usually have three and city suits four. In the 1970s, two buttons suits were seen on some city suits. Today, four buttons suits are common on most business suits and even casual suits.

While the sleeve buttons typically cannot be undone, the stitching is such that it appears they could. Purposeful cuff buttons may be found on high-end or bespoke suits; this characteristic is called a surgeon's cuff. Several wearers leave these buttons undone to make known that they can afford a bespoke suit, although it is correct to leave these buttons done up.
